PJs, leg warmers, necklaces and more 2 comments

I was in Austin Texas last week and found the coolest thing in a vintage clothing store: a thin velvet rope–about 12 inches long–with two beaded balls at either end. Turns out these "necklaces" were big in the 1950s. A week later, I was in NYC and found one of these with white fur balls at each end. What you do is tie the rope around your neck and then the two decorative balls hang down. They look so fun! Now I’m thinking about how to do these a la me.

I also got to see finished versions of my new winter PJs for kids. One set is pink and green, the other is white with multi-colors. I also started working on my PJs for spring. They’re the kind of PJs that you can wear to school and no one will notice that there’s anything weird. They’re also perfect for a slumber party (speaking of slumber parties, I’ve gotten lots e-mails lately from people saying that they love to buy my socks as party favors which makes me very happy!).

Lastly, I’m getting excited about the idea of leg warmers. I hate wearing a skirt in winter and having my legs get all cold. Don’t you?

Hope everyone’s having a good back to school.

Polka Dots in Portland No comments yet

I first want to say how terribly sad I am for all the people affected by hurricane Katrina. I’m gathering blankets, bedding and clothes to drop off at the San Francisco shelter where victims have been sent. My heart goes out to all the families and individuals who have suffered through this horrible time.

I’m just back from Portland and Seattle. I, of course, wear my socks everywhere I go (with my red clogs this trip) and what I discovered is that North Westerners LOVE polka dots and stripes! I felt like I brought a party with me everywhere I went. "Where did you get those socks?!", people kept asking me. First it was the airport security guy (I had to take off my shoes). Then a very tall lady whose daughter is in college. Then a girl in a bookstore who was wearing very pointy shoes. Etc, etc.

I was  taking a lot of pictures on my trip. I keep my digital camera in my new electronic socks. And everyone was asking me about these, too! So, as you can imagine, this was a highly gratifying trip!

I also did a lot of fun things. I went to my favorite bookstores: Powells in Portland and Elliot Bay in Seattle. There are so many books out right now that I want to read. I’ve got the new Harry Potter by my bed, but haven’t dug in yet.

And best of all, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky in either place–practically unheard of!

Hope everyone is having a happy back to school.
